BASTIEN:

I know that my mother, her waters broke the night before I was born, and she spent a solid twenty hours getting rid of me. She definitely went for an epidural. I was the first. And yet it was still a slow and painful process for her. My little sister once asked for details in all their gruesome glory. There was some tearing and some suturing and a lot of shit everywhere. It was like many births, I suppose.

My great-grandmother died the day before I was born. I’m not going to say, outwardly, that I think I might have a little of her in me, because that kind of sentiment is very unscientific. So I will just quietly nod, and let you draw your own conclusions.

My family was very prepared. My dad planned the route and drove it daily for a week just to make sure he knew the way. They lived deep in the countryside then—well, not that deep, but it was a little way to the hospital. There was some flooding, and they had to change the route at the last minute. But they had the suitcase—everything, really—ready. We Questes tend to overthink, overprepare, overstress.
